4.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards the achievement of the learning objectives. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as lectures, practice sessions, autonomous work, study and assessment tasks.

Students are expected to participate actively in class throughout the semester.

Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class.

The course will address the following topics:

  1. Concepts of rhetoric and metre
  2. Dante Alighieri
    • Society and culture in the 13th century
    • Dolce Stil Novo poetry. General characteristics
    • The life of Dante Alighieri and notes on his works
    • The Divina Commedia: composition, structure, themes and style
  3. Francesco Petrarca
    • The life of Petrarca and notes on his works
    • The Canzoniere: composition, structure, themes and style
  4. Giovanni Boccaccio
    • The life of Boccaccio and notes on his works
    • The invention of modern narrative and the Decamerone: composition, structure, themes and style
  5. Humanism, the Renaissance and the Baroque
    • Lorenzo the Magnificient, Luigi Pulci, Matteo Maria Boiardo, Niccolò Machiavelli and Ludovico Ariosto
    • Torquato Tasso and Gerusalemme liberata
  6. The Enlightenment
    • Carlo Goldoni and the dramatic reform. Life and works
  7. Italian melodrama
    • Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti. Main works
  8. The Ottocento
    • Alessandro Manzoni. Life and works
    • Giacomo Leopardi: Life and works
    • Giovanni Verga and Realism. Life and works
  9. The Novecento
    • Notes on the 20th century
    • Hermetic poetry: characteristics, poets and poems. Ungaretti, Montale, Quasimodo, Saba
    • The novel: Italo Calvino
    • Theatre: Luigi Pirandello
